Some versions of Windows are missing Windows Media Player and other media-related technologies needed to decode and play videos and music properly. Microsoft offers a Windows Media Feature Pack (for versions designated as Windows N and KN editions) and a Platform Update Supplement (for Windows Vista and Server 2008) that you can download to add this functionality.

Server

Here are some problems that people have reported when the Windows Media Feature Pack is missing:

Download Internet Explorer 9 (Windows Vista 64-bit/Windows 7 64-bit/Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit) for Windows to surf the Web with the Microsoft browser on your Windows 7 and 2008 machine. Microsoft published a detailed guide on using the in-place upgrade route to upgrade devices running Windows Server 2008 R2. The company wants customers to upgrade to Windows Server 2019 but it is certainly possible to upgrade to an older but still supported version of Server instead.

  • 'Why doesn't Vimeo work?'
  • 'Why do I get a Netflix error that Microsoft Silverlight is required?'

To resolve this, please download and install the Media Feature Pack or Platform Update Supplement that's appropriate for your version of Windows.

If you update Windows to a newer version, you'll need to install the newer version of the Media Feature Pack even though you installed it for the previous Windows version.

Windows 10:

For Windows 10 version 1903 and later, the latest Media Feature Pack can be added as an Optional Feature from Windows Settings. To add the Media Feature Pack, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps and features > Optional features > Add a feature, and then locate Media Feature Pack in the list of available optional features.
